New Year celebrations, Traveling in Japan with a baby

Things you don’t know about New Year in Tokyo with kids!

Merry Christmas!

Will you be in Tokyo for New Years Eve? Or the first few days of January with your kids?

It is SUPER important to plan in advance, because everything is closed!

Many travelers are surprised when they come to Japan over the New Year period. Visitors expect huge celebrations, but come here only to find that it is super quiet and all the museums, sightseeing spots, and shops are shut for the holidays.

So if you ARE here in Tokyo, make sure you plan ahead and read my tips below for how to enjoy the New Year in Japan!

3 Top Places that are open in Tokyo during New Year Period:

  1. Tokyo Skytree Town
    • The Skytree is open all year round! This is a fantastic if you are looking for a baby-friendly location for New Year. Skytree has a huge indoor shopping mall, restaurants, baby nursing rooms and diaper change tables, so it is extremely convenient as a one-day trip.

  2. Edo Tokyo Museum
    • This museum is wonderful, AND it is open 2-3 January 2019 (note: it is closed 24 Dec 2018 – 1 Jan 2019). This is a great option, as most department stores and shops will be closed until 4 January, so you can definitely visit this museum before that on 2-3 Jan.

  3. Tokyo Dome City
    • This fun park has alot of attractions and is open over the new year period! Asobono baby / kids play area is also open, so make sure you visit if your baby needs some activity time away from the Tokyo winter cold!
