Daikanyama area, Jidokans (Public Children Play Halls)

Daikanyama Indoor Play Space (Jidoukan)

Note – only residents of Shibuya Ward can use this indoor play space in Daikanyama. Thanks so much Kanti for letting me know! I called the facilities on the phone and they confirmed this is correct. Lucky for everyone who lives in Shibuya-ku!

Hi! My friend Anna just told me about this fantastic indoor play space in Daikanyama. It is a public indoor playground (called “Jidoukan” in Japanese), and is conveniently located just a 5min walk from Daikanyama Station. Here is the review from Anna!

It has everything – cooking play area, car play area, slide, ball pit, craft centre. There’s a baby area with baby toys. Also a library and a nursing room/feeding room for toddlers, with microwave to warm up food. It’s open 9:30-16:00.

Address: 3rd Floor, 7-9 Daikanyamacho, Shibuya, Tokyo 150-0034 (located above Daikanyama Nursery School)

Website (in Japanese)

Cost: FREE (Jidoukans are free public play spaces. In general, all that is required to enter with your children is to sign in at the front desk.)

Restrictions: Only residents of Shibuya Ward can utilise these facilities. Not all Jidoukans (public indoor community centers) are this strict, but many of them do require you to “sign in” and only allow in families who live in the ward.

Here are some photos of Anna’s daughter having fun with all the toys. Thanks so much Anna!

Can tourists use these play grounds like the Daikanyama Indoor Play Space ? I am traveling to Tokyo in a week and a half with my one year old and this space looks great!
    Thank you.

Hi Corinne! Unfortunately this play space in Daikanyama is only open for residents of Shibuya ward, so tourists are unable to get in. In terms of jidoukans in general, some of them are open to tourists and non-residents (or at least don’t have a strict entry policy). An example is the jidoukan next to Meguro outdoor swimming pool. I’ve been there before with friends and we all got in no problems. I think the best thing to do is to call before you go there to check the entry requirements, or go and ask directly:) Hope you have a wonderful trip! Kate xx
