We were recently in Minami-Aizu-Tajima, located in western Fukushima Prefecture, and had the opportunity to see how rice from Fukushima Prefecture is being tested for cesium radiation. I have seen rice from Fukushima Prefecture on the supermarket shelf in Tokyo, but never really knew how it was tested, so I was very interested to learn about the process. I thought there might be other people who would be interested too, so decided to post the video and photos here.
What we learned:
- The machine used for testing is a high speed food radiation testing system from Fuji Electric.
- The machine can test the radiation of a food product without the effect of external radiation (ie. External radiation does not affect the measurement).
- The machine can test a 30kg bag of rice in 10 sec.
- Every bag of rice is being tested.
- The machine we saw had the lowest reading set at 18 Bq/kg, which means any reading below 18 Bq/kg will be displayed in Japanese as “Under 18 Bq/kg”. Even a reading of zero (ie. No radiation detected) will be displayed as “Under 18 Bq/kg”. (The government limit is 100 Bq/kg.)
- After the bag of rice has been tested and passed, it is labeled with a sticker which has a QR code and says that the bag of rice has passed the radiation test.

福島県の西側に位置する南会津の田島に訪れる機会がありました。そこで、福島県ではお米の放射線量をどのように測っているかについてみる機会があったのでお伝えします。東京のスーパーで、福島県産のお米を見かけることがあるので、きっとどのように測量されているのか興味がある方も多いのではないでしょうか。そこで、お米の放射線量の測定についての動画と写真をここに投稿することにしました。
- 高速で食料品の放射線量を測定する器械は、Fuji Electric（フジエレクトリック）のものが使用されていました。
- この測定器は、外部の放射線量の影響を受けずに測定することが可能です。(測定環境の放射線量が高くとも数値には影響を及ぼしません)
- この測定器は、お米３０キロをわずか１０秒で測定することが可能です。
- 出荷予定の商品すべてがここではテストされていました。（サンプルテスト、抜き打ちテストではない）
- 私たちが見学したときに測定された米はすべて18 Bq/kgを下回っていました。18 Bq/kg以下のものはすべて「18 Bq/kg以下」と表示されます。かりに測定値が０であった場合も、18 Bq/kgとなります。（政府の規定する基準値は100 Bq/kg以下です）
- お米の測定が終わり、基準値を下回っていることを確認すると、測定終了のQRコードつきのラベルがはられます。
